Donor Story

Plaid with a Purpose

When her father Gerry was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019, Alison and her family joined the growing number of fellow Canadians affected by cancer. For the next four years, the family participated in the Plaid for Dad fundraising event to show support for their dad by wearing plaid on the Friday before Father's Day.

When the event didn't happen in 2023, Alison and her family wanted to continue the tradition by supporting Our Cancer Campaign and the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre where Gerry was receiving his care.

“We've been so blessed that he has such a great team looking after him and the care he needs is so close to home,” said Alison at the time. “It just makes things so much easier that we have this in our community.”

Unfortunately, Gerry passed last November. But that didn't stop Alison and Gerry's Tartan Army from continuing their annual tradition.

On June 23, Gerry's Birthday, the family stopped by Oshawa Hospital to celebrate surpassing $10,000 raised for cancer care at Lakeridge Health and the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre.
