On May 29, Lakeridge Health Foundation and our teammates in the R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre gathered to celebrate the legacy of an incredible couple with deep ties to Lakeridge Health, Dr. Hak Ming and Deborah (Debbie) Chiu.
Hak Ming and Debbie dedicated more than four decades of service to Lakeridge Health. Dr. Chiu was one of the first trained Hematologists to come from the University of Toronto, and his pioneering work in haematologic and medical oncology helped lay the foundation for the Cancer Centre. As a nurse, Debbie began her career in the Emergency Department at the Oshawa Hospital, but she found her true passion working in Oncology and Systemic Therapy alongside Hak Ming.
Both Hak Ming and Debbie were also Honourary Chairs of Our Cancer Campaign, helping raise over $21 million for cancer care at Lakeridge Health from 2021 to 2024.
Hak Ming passed away in February 2022, but we are proud to recognize their contributions to cancer care and generous support of our Foundation with a plaque on the DRCC staff patio.
