Game-changing patient care in our region

No one should have to commute for cancer care. Thanks to recent support from the Durham Region community and Government of Ontario, Lakeridge Health is expanding its exceptional cancer care services to include innovative tumour-detecting technology, closer to home.

Specifically, Lakeridge Health is now providing PET-CT scans for patients. PET-CT scanners combine positron emission tomography (PET) with the more commonly known computed tomography (CT) to provide highly sensitive, detailed, three-dimensional scans that help oncologists detect and monitor cancer.

Prior to bringing this technology to Lakeridge Health, approximately 30 patients per week were being sent outside Durham Region to receive PET-CT scans as part of their cancer diagnosis and treatment. Now, many patients are able to have these scans at Lakeridge Health ensuring the best, most advanced care is available right here in Durham Region.

“I’ve had more than my fair share of PET-CT scans. The news that patients like me won’t have to travel into the city for this part of treatment is amazing to hear,” says Marc (pictured above), a patient at Lakeridge Health’s R.S. McLaughlin Durham Regional Cancer Centre.

Community support makes the dreams of our experts possible – such as having PET-CT at our hospital. The reality is that government funding doesn’t cover all of our health care needs. Communities that support their hospital foundations are the ones that have access to the best health care. There are many ways to support your local hospital foundation, including through a legacy gift.

Also known as planned gifts, legacy gifts have had and will continue to have a significant impact on patient care at Lakeridge Health. There are a number of meaningful ways to leave a legacy gift, ranging from your Will to life insurance, which you can discuss with your professional advisor or a charitable giving expert at Lakeridge Health Foundation.

Exceptional patient care is what our community has come to know and expect. We will remain dedicated to supporting our experts and the inspiring families they care for every day.

Together, we will change lives today, tomorrow and for generations to come.
