Celebrating National Nursing Week at Lakeridge Health

May 10-16, 2021 marks National Nursing Week and we couldn't be more grateful for the compassionate nurses at our Lakeridge Health Hospitals! The dedication to community health care we see from our nurses every day is so inspiring and we are in awe of their tireless efforts during this pandemic.

Every year during National Nursing Week, Lakeridge Health supports the professional development of our nursing staff by awarding a number of bursaries including the Margaret Stainton Nursing Bursary made possible by an Endowment Fund set up by long-time donor, and former nurse, Margaret Stainton.

A long-time donor with Lakeridge Health Foundation, Maraget is a retired nurse who worked at the General Motors plant in Oshawa for 26 years. “It means a lot to me to see my donations directly helping nurses advance their career and I always look forward to attending the nursing awards ceremony to meet the recipients,” says Margaret. “It’s nice for me to know I can help them take courses and training while also alleviating the financial burden that can make it difficult for some.”

This month, 12 nurses received bursaries thanks to Margaret’s generosity:

  • Aimee Gannon
  • Claire Bishop
  • Holiness Ehikpehae
  • Jiun-Yi Zullo
  • Stephanie Donis
  • Tanya Ilavsky
  • Amy Lloyd
  • Ksenia Usenko
  • Caitlin Tumey
  • Amanda MacMillan
  • Courtney Sitler
  •  Alexis Appleby

“Sometimes the journey towards your goals seems like a challenge that is impossible and often lonely. However, if I look hard I can see that I was never alone in this journey, that there are many people who in big and small ways helped me through the finish line,” says Jiun Zullo, one of 13 recipients of the Margaret Stainton Bursary in 2020. “I want to thank Margaret for being one of those who helped me through the finish line.”

Bursaries are just one example of how Endowment Funds can make a meaningful and ongoing impact on your local hospital. These Funds are invested in perpetuity through Lakeridge Health Foundation and the annual income from that investment supports equipment, capital projects, research and/or educational opportunities like bursaries at your local Hospital.
